The Refit - Design & Inspiration

Hunky Dory Fish and Chips Restaurant were looking for a fresh and friendly environment for their new Burwood restaurant in the Burwood One Shopping Center. 

Maria Kromidellis, founder of Makro Design, who was awarded the project wanted to create a seating and eating environment encompassed within an earthy and calm setting.

Maria’s inspiration for Hunky Dory Fish stemmed from the ripples created on the beach sand by sea tides. The timber dowels offered a shape and material that could represent the soft ripples from the beach sand by portraying them on the arched metal framed supports and became the dominant feature in the restaurant fit-out.

She chose timber dowels as it offered a material “where the customer would be embraced by a soft colour palette and ripple effect offered by the horizontally layered timber dowels”.

Timber has always been Maria’s signature material in her designs, sharing they “protrude a sense of style and simple elegance that can be moulded to fit any theme. Timber dowels offer a timeless  and perfect component with in a space”.

The Design Specification

Salvatore DiLorenzo, from MAZS Corp Shopfitting took Maria’s design and chose Porta’s timber dowels because the quality of the timber was high. He commented “the dowels were great to work with because they were high quality. They were straight, consistent in finish and I liked the grains in the Tas Oak”.  Salvatore was impressed that over 1048 LM that were used in this design (437 pieces of 45mm wide 2.4m & 3.6m dowel) were “all straight so we had no problems with installation”.
