Beautiful, textured timber panelling adds warm, earthy tones to this stunning kitchen from freelance designer Sophie Doumbiotis, Sophie Katina Design.
Located in a cherry orchard in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia, owners Sarah and Nathan wanted to create a functional, family friendly kitchen to complement their rammed earth home.
“I was brought into the project by Sarah and Nathan to design and assist with the joinery aspect of their home,” explains Sophie. “The family of four, plus Disco the family dog, are building their passion project - a grand design fuelled by hard work and two very driven individuals.”
Inspired by the contours of the Australian landscape, beautiful Porta Contours timber lining boards in Cirque were selected by the client for the kitchen island and rangehood.
“Warmth, texture, and complementary details were requested in the early days of planning,” says Sophie. “Sarah and Nathan were happy for me to take the wheel design wise and were very trusting throughout the process.”
As a fluted textured canvas, Porta Contours in Cirque are perfect as a feature in a kitchen, bedroom, hallway, lounge, or dining room - adding warmth, movement and richness to the material palette.
“I personally love how well the tone and texture of Porta Contours sits so well with the rammed earth structure,” explains Sophie.
Selected for its tone, subtle texture and flexibility, Cirque softens strong lines and can also be used to clad cabinetry and doors as well as creating concealed doorways for a seamless finish.
To create the perfect kitchen, Sophie recommends focusing on the daily use of the space as well as the needs of the family. “Take into account primary as well as secondary tasks that take place in the kitchen,” she explains. “Be mindful of where everything will be stored and how you will move around in the new space.”
As an interior designer, Sophie is seeing a growing trend of using natural materials, textures and colours, like timber and marble, in kitchen design.
“I love the flexibility of Porta Contours and the various finishing possibilities,” says Sophie.
Designed for ease of installation with a secret fix tongue and groove connection, Cirque can be used in conjunction with any other Contours profile to create a unique design. Cirque is also suitable for curves down to a 1000mm radius. For tighter curves, down to a 500mm radius, a matching corner bead is available.
