Finding it difficult to source a dining table that fit their space and budget, Katrina and Jesse from The Reno Life decided to make their own.

“In this house, having a small living and dining room has definitely meant overcoming some space challenges,” explains Katrina. “We've needed to think outside the box to make it feel and function as more spacious than it is.”

The solution to complement their dining space was a round table. “Naturally I was drawn to the $2185 (without shipping) Globe West Tully table but, understandably, Jesse didn't want a bar of that,” says Katrina. “So, he offered to make one instead!”

“We found a 100-year-old Tasmanian Oak tabletop on Gumtree Australia that needed some tweaking, then Jesse made a base that he clad in Porta Half Round Dowel in Tasmanian Oak,” explains Katrina. “Some sanding, experimenting with oils, re-sanding, patching router holes and a bit more drama resulted in a final product that I absolutely love and will treasure for years to come!”

The Reno Life DIY Dining Table:

The process:

  • 1 x round template from 3mm MDF to create 3 x 18mm discs (circumference measured out to be equivalent to 60 pieces of the 30mm x 12mm Half Round Dowels).
  • Join together with timber uprights to create a tower.
  • Attach Tasmanian Oak base disc, 50mm smaller to create shadow line.
  • Clad structure in Porta 30 x 12mm Half Round Dowels (using liquid nails, a strap and nails).
  • Sand the Tasmanian Oak tabletop and attach.
  • Sand and seal the table.

Measuring 1350mm in diameter and 760mm high, “This dupe of the Globe West Tully cost us $560, and we absolutely love using a round table in our home,” says Katrina.
