Create With Mouldings: Classic Chevron Design

Add architectural interest to a room with classic Chevron.

Whether your home is traditional or contemporary in design, timber mouldings can be used to add depth, style and architectural interest to a room. They can be simple and streamlined for a minimalist effect, classic, or elaborate and decorative. When colour is added to the equation, different effects can be achieved (similar colours tend to ‘blend in’, whilst opposite colours tend to highlight).

Spacial illusions can also be created with timber mouldings. To make the pattern stand out, leave the mouldings natural or paint them in a contrasting colour. For a monochromatic look, paint the decorative wall trims in the same colour as your wall (this will also make the room appear larger). For a more dramatic look, try a darker shade of your favourite colour.

By layering colours and textures, you can achieve a warm and welcoming look that is both stylish and sophisticated.

This style of decorative wall trim is easy to apply and can be used in almost any room in a home to add depth and dimension. Porta Dressed All Round (DAR) has been machined on all sides leaving a smooth surface, and it’s available in a range of sizes and timber species.

To get started:

Measure the width and height of the feature wall.
Sketch the design – you can make the Chevron pattern as small or as large as you like. A good idea is to keep the spacing between the pattern the same size. This will produce a consistent overall design.
Select your mouldings – we used Dressed All Round (DAR) in this room. When purchasing, allow for cutting and joining.
Pre-cut your mouldings to size.
Prep the wall mouldings - we painted the walls and mouldings in Dulux Powdered Gum.
Install the mouldings – use a spacer for consistency. We installed the vertical mouldings first followed by the horizontal pieces.

Styling Tip

Style the classic Chevron with raw timber and organic, natural pieces.

Handy Tip

Save time and stain or paint the mouldings before installation. Find a dry, well-ventilated and dust-free area to apply the finish to your moulding. Ensure all areas that have filler are dry and sanded before applying any paint.

If you install the mouldings and then finish them, protect the area around the moulding by masking it off with tape. Carefully remove the tape immediately after finishing to prevent it sticking to the finish. Mouldings with a pronounced wood grain are better suited to stain or varnish to enhance the naturally occurring grain. Mouldings, such as pine, can be stained to virtually any tint. It is recommended that finger jointed products are primed and then painted with a high quality paint.
