30 million people each year use the 6.8 km Atlantic City Boardwalk. Installed in an environment with extremes of temperature and where sand, salt and fire risks are major considerations, the boardwalk requires an extremely durable timber. Cumaru was the perfect product for the challenge. The city’s engineer, John Feairheller is confident the choice of Cumaru means the “boardwalk will last another 100 years”.
Cumaru was chosen for the city's boardwalk because of its negligible tannin bleed feature that makes construction faster as it eliminates the need to wash out tannins that could leach out and stain adjoining surfaces. Cumaru's durability and resistance to splintering also means enhanced safety for patrons and its high load bearing capability met all construction requirements.
